Here's one way to keep your chickens dry. Pete Betchik of Madison on the Lake, Ohio built a chicken shelter using found materials. "The frame is made from wooden pallets, the roof also is pallet wood. The sides are old steel shelves. The inside is lined with old pizza boxes, the nest box was once used to ship fresh fish to market, and the front door was an industrial clothes dryer front."
While I am a firm believer in sustainable, organic farming at the local level, Globalists have a totally different perspective. They believe in corporate farming using pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and genetically modified seeds.
At the G8 summit (summer 2009), Globalists highlighted the underinvestment in agriculture in emerging countries. Recent estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization, which is a division of the U.N., estimated that nearly 1 billion people would go hungry in 2009.
So here are my suggestions on how to profit from the need to grow more food globally. Invest in JJA ($44.66) – an index composed of seven futures contracts, soybeans, corn, wheat, cotton, soybean oil, coffee and sugar. Another good one is MOO ($42.54) – it invests in big agriculture names such as ADM, Monsanto, as well as fertilizer companies.
New labels listing the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of foods, from whole wheat pasta to fast food burgers, are appearing on some grocery items and restaurant menus around Sweden. The same concept is being proposed across the EU.
Besides causing massive consumer confusion, the emissions impact of, say, a carrot, can vary by a factor of 10, depending how and where it is grown. Who is going to determine and regulate this? Will small farms & cattle ranchers be exempt? Will this lead to even more consolidation in the food industry?
All one can say at this point is the cost of producing food will be going up and producers will try to pass on that cost to consumers. I encourage my readers to grow their own food. Then take steps to learn how to can, freeze, and dehydrate that food. Even apartment dwellers can do simple gardens with the Topsy Turvy and Chia Herb Gardens
There are 2 main reasons why food is skyrocketing in price:: the falling value of the US dollar (we import more food than we export) and transportation costs.
About 25,000 food shipments arrive daily in the USA from more than 100 countries!
That food has to be transported by boat, by rail, then by truck. On average about 1500 miles!
That’s why local organic farming is the most sustainable way to grow and consume food.
Also called the "fat tax", this tax has been introduced in New York and California. Now President Obama is looking fund a portion of the health care plan with it.
Please understand that I'm no fan of soft drinks ever since I learned they contain benzene! While it may be popular to tax sugary snacks like soda pop, ultimately it will hurt those who can least afford it.
Follow this logic. The government will not stop at soda, it will impose taxes on salty snacks, greasy fast food, and so on. Now the folks who want to live my life for me would say "This is all to make you more healthy". But what about the folks that have limited access to healthy alternatives. The ones who live in food deserts? A food desert is a district with little or no access to foods needed to maintain a healthy diet, but often served by plenty of fast food restaurants. Until you solve this problem first, only the poor (the ones without adequate heath care) will suffer.
The other day I was watching the news and they had a Chicago chef, along with an expert forager, picking up food along side a Wisconsin road. So I got to thinking about expanding my free food post with a few web sites below. Happy hunting!
