Phone Service for $19.95 A Year?
The MagicJack needs a broadband connection. It's about the size of a matchbox and plugs into a PC. After plugging a regular phone into the MagicJack, the user can make and receive calls much like using a regular land line.
The MagicJack costs $39.95, including one year of free calls
to the U.S. and Canada. Another year of service costs $19.95.
Many customers buy a MagicJack as a complement to a cell
phone, compensating for poor cell coverage at home. When the computer is off,
the service can be set to forward incoming calls to a cell phone.
There are a number of complaints online and at the BBB for
this product. I have used this product for two months. When I installed it, it knocked out my sound card (Windows XP). I had
to go into control panel to fix my settings, but only once. It can take 3 to 4
weeks to get the 911 service to activate. You will have calls that connect
poorly but a redial has always worked for me. It has no uninstall icon, so see
the post
at Digital Nomads for help with that. Also read the unofficial forum for other
tips/help.
Bottom Line: For those who hate tinkering and connection frustrations, do not buy this product!!! For me the savings (1 year of local and local long distance + 1010 numbers cost me over $300) are worth the occasional tinkering and dropouts.
